Problem
Water Leakage into the Production Hall in Ústí nad Labem Due to Poor Roof Condition at Rooflight Junctions
Detailed Description:
The roof covering consists of soft PVC membrane strips. Roof elements protruding above the membrane include rooflights, HVAC systems, air conditioning units, and vent pipes. Rainwater drainage is managed by directing water into drainage channels equipped with GEBERIT drain outlets.
Defects:
During rainfall, water infiltrated the production hall beneath the rooflights. The defects were primarily located at the joints of PVC strips in the welds and at the complex details of rooflight insulation, such as corners. Due to the degradation of waterproofing materials and the dilation of the entire roof covering, the internal elasticity of the PVC membrane decreased. Over time, the membrane became significantly powdery and brittle, resulting in cracks and fractures in exposed areas. This led to rainwater penetration and leaks inside the building.
Solution
The client approached us in 2017 seeking a solution for the existing condition of the production hall roof, which showed signs of requiring urgent reconstruction. We proposed a three-phase solution:
- PLASTONIT Technology – to seal minor cracks in stressed areas and around the rooflights.
- Application of Glass-Lamination Mat – to restore and reinforce the entire roof.
- Application of a Two-Layer PLASTONIT SILVER Coating.
Result
This approach not only eliminated water leakage and further degradation of the PVC membrane but also saved the roof from a complete reconstruction and extended its lifespan by another twenty years.
The client is highly satisfied with the current condition of the roof. There are no more leaks into the hall, and thanks to the coating's color, the temperature inside the hall during summer months has decreased by several degrees, resulting in savings on air conditioning costs.
